Inspired by my very talented and enthusiastic niece, Matilda, ‘Tilda’s Tiger’ is about the cutest pop of color you could hope for in your home. Acrylic paint on canvas, it measures 8 inches x 8 inches x 1.5 inches and will arrive wired and ready to hang.

About this painting:

My niece, Matilda, is already, at the age of 11, quite a prolific and award-winning artist! We recently got to spend a few hours together in my studio and she came prepared and ready to get to work. She brought her own canvas which she was very excited to have propped up on my large easel and she even brought reference sketches for what she planned to paint that day!

I was so inspired by her sketches that I watched over her shoulder as she painted and created a whimsical tiger of my own. During our painting session we talked about complimentary colors, the horribly awkward phases paintings go through and how to get past them, calming your inner critic, and finding balance between bright and neutral and busy and simple. And as proper visual storytellers do, we created elaborate back stories for our Tigers involving battles with a far off queen, tigers loosing their stripes, and mother-son relationships.

Flip through the photos and you’ll see not only my completed painting but Matilda’s reference sketch, her Tiger which she’s considering a work in progress, and perhaps my favorite detail: The paint palette she brought with her. She likes to let her excess paint dry on the palette (not a bad practice as paint washed down the sink into the water system can be pretty harmful) and once it’s nice and thick and dry she finds it SO satisfying to peel the paint off in one big chunk. I think a lot of us artists can relate to that feeling!

A portion of the sale of this artwork will be used to support the aspirations my budding artist pal. She’s such an inspiration to me, I’m happy to keep her inspired as well. And she goes through a lot of paint!
